A Decade Of Pain Led Me To Chiropractic Care

I just wish I had known then what I know now. I experienced a decade of unnecessary chronic pain, from an injury that happened slowly over time, doing my favorite activity: competitive swimming.

I started seriously swimming when I was 11 years old, and through my teens I competed all over North America. This was serious fun, and I trained 9 times/week. However, swimming also left me with a severe shoulder injury. As a determined teen, I kept swimming, went to physiotherapy daily, had conventional chiropractic treatment, and routine cortisone injections. All these interventions were directed at treating my symptoms, but no one was able to correct my underlying problem. By age 18, my pain and physical limitations were so severe that I had to stop competing, and give up my aspirations as a swimmer.

During my early 20’s, I sought out alternative ways to care for my pain and injury. This ultimately guided my first career as a registered massage therapist. I worked in a NUCCA chiropractic clinic, and one of the doctors offered to assess my chronic shoulder injury. At first I was skeptical, but when he explained the mechanics of this technique, it made perfect sense. I was eager to see if this gentle adjustment would indeed fix my problem at the source. I had regular NUCCA adjustments, and within 6 weeks, I was pain free. Moreover, I was so inspired and convinced from this personal experience, that I decided to pursue NUCCA chiropractic as my career.

My Chiropractic Journey

I graduated in 2002 from Life Chiropractic College West in California. I chose this school because I was impressed with the knowledgeable chiropractors teaching the program, and the emphasis on applying my learning to clinical care. I’m fully trained in the NUCCA adjusting procedures. I’ve also taken postgraduate training in Applied Kinesiology.

Most patients and families come see me for care and treatment of their chronic pain, including headaches & migraines, vertigo, neck & back pain, sciatica, and sports & occupational related injuries. I use the NUCCA procedure to balance your head properly over your spine and pelvis. I guide patients through self-care, including stretching and strengthening exercises. Patients with chronic issues may benefit from treatments with Applied Kinesiology to further aid the body in healing. I take an integrated, holistic approach to health care, and believe that you need to be treated as a whole person, and not just a symptom or part.

Some activities that help me stay healthy include yoga and road biking. I’m able to maintain my fitness with regular NUCCA care. Now that I’m able to swim again, I’ve completed several triathlons, including 3 Ironman races. My wife Andrea and I like to run, hike and snowshoe together. She’s a nursing professor at Mount Royal University. We have 2 energetic teenagers who make sure that our life is never boring. We have 2 large affectionate dogs, and a cat who wishes that the dogs were somewhere else. Even with our busy family life, we stay balanced by making time for each other, and for ourselves as individuals.

My approach to care with patients and families is highly individualized since every person has unique strengths, beliefs, abilities, and preferences. I encourage my patients to seek out health information from trusted and reliable sources. I demonstrate my commitment to this approach by providing financial support for high-quality NUCCA chiropractic research. I work with patients and families as active members in their ongoing care to ensure their highest level of well-being. I also refer to a network of integrative health providers including naturopaths, acupuncturists, registered massage therapists, physiotherapists, and dentists.
